Athenaeum Scientific Publishers (“Athenaeum” or “the Publisher”) participates in the Crossmark initiative, a multi-publisher service operated by Crossref. Crossmark provides readers with a standardized and reliable method to identify the current and authoritative version of a scholarly work.
By applying the Crossmark logo to its publications, Athenaeum Scientific Publishers commits to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record and to clearly notifying readers of any post-publication changes, updates, or corrections. This policy supports transparency, trust, and long-term reliability of published research.

Crossmark applies to peer-reviewed content published by Athenaeum Scientific Publishers and registered with a Crossref DOI, including but not limited to:
Original Research Articles
Review Articles
Editorials
Conference Proceedings
Book Chapters
Crossmark is implemented for current and future publications. Previously published archival content may not display the Crossmark logo unless a post-publication update, correction, or editorial action is required. Crossmark implementation does not replace the responsibility of readers to critically evaluate research findings but serves as a tool to verify the publication status and integrity of the scholarly record.
When a reader clicks the Crossmark logo, a status dialog box appears indicating the current status of the document, such as:
Current – The document is the version of record and has not been updated
Update Available – A correction, update, or editorial notice has been issued
Retracted – The article has been retracted and should not be relied upon
This allows readers to verify the reliability of the content at the point of use.
The Crossmark dialog may also display additional metadata deposited with Crossref, including:
Funding information (where provided by authors)
Author identifiers (e.g., ORCID iDs)
License and copyright information
Publication and update history
Athenaeum Scientific Publishers follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines to manage post-publication changes.
Corrections are issued when errors are identified that do not compromise the overall validity of the research (e.g., typographical errors, author details, minor factual inaccuracies).
A separate correction notice is published
The notice is linked to the original article via DOI
The Crossmark status is updated to indicate that an update is available
Retractions are issued in cases of serious errors, unreliable findings, ethical breaches, or confirmed research misconduct, in accordance with COPE Retraction Guidelines.
A retraction notice is published and linked to the original article
The original article remains accessible for the scholarly record
The PDF is clearly marked as “Retracted”
Crossmark metadata is updated immediately to reflect the retracted status
If concerns about a publication are under investigation and a final outcome is not yet available, an Expression of Concern may be issued.
The notice is linked to the article
Crossmark metadata alerts readers to the unresolved issue
Where applicable, updates such as supplementary material additions or clarifications may be issued. All changes are documented to preserve version transparency and distinguish the version of record from subsequent updates.
To ensure accurate Crossmark records:
Authors are responsible for promptly notifying the Editorial Office of any errors discovered after publication
Editors are responsible for ensuring that all post-publication actions (corrections, retractions, expressions of concern) are properly reviewed and registered with Crossref
All Crossmark-related metadata deposits are maintained in accordance with Crossref technical requirements

This Crossmark Policy is reviewed periodically to ensure continued alignment with Crossref requirements, COPE Core Practices, and evolving publishing standards. Any updates to this policy will be reflected on the publisher’s website and, where applicable, in Crossmark metadata.
